Christmas by the Fireside

Dominic Goodwin and Friends

Join us online over the festive season for a fun and informal specially-made feel-good show.

Actor and director Dominic Goodwin has been coming to The Swallow Theatre for very many years and calls it his ‘second home’. He has worked with many local amateur performers who over time have volunteered to tread the boards on our tiny stage. He has brought a variety of comedy farces and poignant dramas here, including ‘The Kaiser and I’, ‘Find The Lady’, ‘Holmes & Watson: The Farewell Tour’, ‘The Last Post & On Scarborough Front’, ‘Twice Nightly’ and ‘Up Frankie’.

Dominic was the resident pantomime dame at the Georgian Theatre Royal from 2010-2012, and has worked extensively as an actor and director on tours in the north of England and Scotland, and for BBC Radio 4. He and his wife Rosemary now own and run Banks Music Publications, one of the UK’s best known independent choral publishers and suppliers.

Our homemade treat, filmed within lockdown restrictions in Dumfries & Galloway and North Yorkshire, includes seasonal readings such as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ and an extract from ‘Dulce Domum’ from Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. The show also includes an archive recording of the hilarious 25-minute version of ‘Holmes & Watson: The Farewell Tour’ by Stuart Fortey featuring Dominic Goodwin and Julian Finnigan filmed here at The Swallow Theatre in 2018. All wrapped up with winter poems and carols such as ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ sung by Rosemary Goodwin accompanied by local pianist Eileen Robinson.

The show is free to watch, and is our gift to you this Christmas. You’ll need to register, so please sign up and then view the broadcast at any time to suit you between midday on Friday 18 December and 10pm on Sunday 3 January.

If you enjoy it, and have a few coins to throw in the virtual bucket as the performance ends, donations to The Swallow Theatre Roof Appeal will be most gratefully received.

We are so thankful to everyone involved in creating this production for giving their time in support of The Swallow Theatre Roof Appeal.

"Nothing short of breathtaking... You won't see many one-woman shows as good as this."
Adelaide Theatre Guide
"Vaughan superbly switches from Regency character to character - one moment the wretched, love-lorn Marianne Dashwood from 'Sense and Sensibility', next the hard-hearted Mrs Norris of 'Mansfield Park' and then the ditzy spinster Miss Bates from 'Emma'."
Adelaide Advertiser

Dominic Goodwin and everyone involved in the making of this production have kindly and generously agreed that any proceeds raised from viewing this recording will go toward The Swallow Theatre Roof Appeal.
